Dear President Obama,
For one year now, our nation has been engaged in a great American debate over your plans for health care reform. In that time, you have held many town hall forums, you have sat through long nights of discussions with Members of Congress, you have held private meetings with health care providers, pharmaceutical companies, union leaders and, of course, insurance company executives.
In August, as Congress returned to their home districts, the American people made their voices heard - louder than ever - on the subject of health care reform.
Yet even as public opinion turned, you persisted in trying to find a way to pass a government-run health care plan. Election results in Virginia and New Jersey did not convince you or your allies in Congress that health care reform was headed down the wrong path. Even a close call in New York 's 23rd Congressional District failed to slow down the reckless rush to pass a health care bill that is bad for patients and bad for taxpayers.
Last week, in one of the most stunning political upsets in American history, the voters of Massachusetts sent a message with crystal-clarity. Bay State voters said "We already have government-run health reform, and we sure don't want any more."
Mr. President, will you finally listen to the American people? They are saying loud and clear -- We don't want bureaucrats in charge of our private health care decisions. We don't want long waits for care. And we don't want higher taxes to pay for it.
Mr. President, you have the opportunity in your State of the Union speech to show the American public that you've heard their voices. Very clearly and publicly drop your government-run public option plan once and for all. That will let America know you've heard
their voices.
Sincerely,
Rick Scott
