We Have Solutions on Health Care, Mr. President

Mr. President:

In your speech last night you said if anyone had any better ideas on how to reform health care to let you know.  Well, Mr. President, that is precisely what we've been trying to do for the past 11 months.  But unfortunately, you've ignored our ideas just as you continue to ignore the public's rejection oF your government-run Public Option health plan.  The facts aren't in debate.  The public has spoken emphatically and repeatedly in opposition to the government-run public option and the plans Congress has put forward.  Public opinion polls turned against these plans midway through last year as Americans learned the details of the plans, August saw repeated protests at congressional town hall meetings, and most recently the election of Scott Brown to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts punctuated the public's opposition.

You've ignored these suggestions in the past, but we are hopeful you will listen to them now.  Here is what we propose to reform the best health care system in the world.  These are ideas that would garner substantial bipartisan support, would be received warmly by the American people, and would preserve patients' rights.  We call them the four pillars of meaningful health care reform:

  1. Choice: Ensure that Americans are guaranteed their choice of doctor and choice of health plan that best fits their needs and budget.

  2. Competition: Allow insurance companies to sell their products across state lines so consumers have a wide variety of plans from which to choose.  Providers should publicly post their prices so consumers can shop and compare.

  3. Accountability: Make health care services more accessible, transparent and open through standardized insurance claims forms and give individuals the same tax breaks for health insurance that employers get.

  4. Personal Responsibility: Reward people for making healthy choices.  Infusing personal responsibility into health care reform allows us all to maintain our cherished freedom to live our lives without government intrusion.

These reforms would cost virtually nothing to enact and they would result in LOWER health care costs and better patient care - NOT BIGGER government and HIGHER deficits.  I would be happy to meet with you personally at any time to discuss how these reforms would prove beneficial to the American people.

Sincerely,
Rick Scott
